An installation for the treatment of gas cylinders with dangerous residual contents started its operation in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Facility of GEKA in Munster, Germany.
Central part of the system is the security reactor RETOS that was engineered by the waste management company UTM Umwelt-Technik-Metallrecycling GmbH and that is operated at the site of GEKA in Munster. The installed technologie enables to remove hazardous residual content from scrap gas cylinders, even with defect valve, and to dispose its content by injection in the first incinerator of GEKA mbH, which is able to dispose a wide variety of hazardous materials. A second security reactor is in operation at the special waste incinerator of Trédi, close to Lyon, France.

Acetylene cylinders are considered by many as "empty" when they have no gas pressure. These gas cylinders, often old cylinders ready for scrapping, contain high quantities of solvent in the porous mass.
"The consequences of such an explosion are comparable with the ones of a fully charged acetylene cylinder,.."

During excavations 16 old gas cylinders were found in the city of Erlangen, located in the south of Germany. The cylinders with unknown content were in a bad condition.
UTM Umwelt-Technik-Metallrecycling GmbH with headoffice in Lübeck, received first enquires in the morning of Thursday, the 26th of november 2010. In the early evening UTM received the order for the salvage and disposal operation.
Due to the bad condition of the cylinders the usage of salvage pressure containers for the safe transport to the dispoal facility was required. The GASTOR Typ M, a salvage pressure container for hazardous gas cylinders, was developed and manufactured by UTM and was deployed for this operation.
The same day, Thursday evening, around 6:30 PM a total of 14 salvage pressure containers (GASTOR Typ M) were loaded on a truck and sent to Erlangen.
Friday afternoon, 27th of december, the UTM team was on site, ready to start with the operation. Until the evening all cylinders could be loaded and secured in safety in the GASTOR salvage container.
